Signed by Author Typewriter ribbon copy of "Before The Play", complete in 44 single sided pages, of which there are hand corrections by King on half a dozen or so, a prologue the novel The Shining. Includes four page afterword. It is written in a play format, which was King's original intention for the Shining. There are 5 scenes that make up Before The Play: Scene 1 chronicles the construction of the Overlook Hotel and the death of the owners son: Scene 2 depicts the nightmares experienced by Lottie Pillsbury during her honeymoon at the Overlook.

These were never offered for sale, rather they were meant for personal distribution to friends and family of Steve. The five stories that constitute the novel were originally published in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction: 1. The Gunslinger October The Way Station April The Oracle and the Mountains February The Slow Mutants July The Gunslinger and the Dark Man November It took Steve twelve and a half years to finish the novel.
The finished product was first published by Donald M. Grant, Publishers as a limited edition in and a First Edition of 10, copies, which was very small for a King novel. The following year, after Pet Sematary noted The Dark Tower among King's previous works, many fans called the offices of King, Grant and Doubleday wanting more information on the already out of print book. That led to another run of 10, copies of the Second Edition. In , Plume released it in trade paperback form, and since then fans have been able to read this great story in many formats.
