More widely known as March 3rd, I don't even know how to rate this. Th "Don't rape me," she breathed out raggedly. This book was "romantic suspense," and it was a mixed bag. The "suspense" part was good. The "romance" aspect needed serious work. She grew up with a really abusive mother, a batshit crazy sociopath who did terrible things to her.
She saw her father infrequently, and he died when she was One night, two men walk into her bookshop. One is a mysterious stranger who's sinister, murderous intentions are only known to the reader, and the other is Jake Boston. Kit developed a huge crush on Boston when she was She worked in a law firm for three summers, ages Jake Boston, even though wildly attracted to her, never encouraged her crush or made a move on her because he thought she was too young. You are a creeper. This is just starting us off on the wrong foot. Telling me that these people wanted to have sex with each other when she was 15 and he was No matter how much you say "they are adults now and they are perfect for each other," I am just grossed out.
Anyway, now Kit is 24 and Jake Boston has just shown up in sunny California again after spending a year in Tokyo - a year to recover from the fact that his wife had been murdered and he was the prime suspect. It was a loveless marriage to a manipulative and cold-hearted woman. He left for Tokyo without saying 'goodbye' to Kit or telling her where he was going, which has made her hate him.
He's come to grovel and convince her to give him a second chance on being Boyfriend. Later that night, the other man - the sinister man - goes to Kit's mother's house and murders her by stabbing her to death with a butcher knife. Kit becomes the prime suspect There were three parts to this novel: 1. I liked it. McKeehan kept me guessing and she kept throwing interesting twists and turns which kept me interested. I really liked the whole plot about the mysterious killer and piecing together Kit's murky past.
This thread was wonderful. Okay, first of all, you can't introduce a couple and tell me that they've had a "thing" for each other since she was 14 and he was I mean, ew. That is disgusting. Creep city. If you want to have an age difference, fine. You can make a year-old fall in love with a oryear-old - I don't care.
I don't care what the age of that someone is, but everyone involved must be at least I don't care if they didn't get physical - it's fucking creepy to think about some year-old going to a law office and being ogled and lusted after by some sleazebag who only backs off because he learns she's underage. Major turn-off. Just don't go there. When he first met her she'd been far too young, but so OMG I'm going to be sick.
He drew in a deep, shaky breath. He wanted this woman. He'd known her when she was a kid, knew what she looked like at fourteen. Wasn't there something wrong about that? But God, she was like fresh air he needed to breathe. Then, I had to deal with the slight creepiness of Jake Boston. There's more. But he held her there locked in his arms. With her squirming against him, his lower half started to respond.
If he didn't let her go, he feared a response she wouldn't be too pleased about at the moment. He strips her to her bra and panties and puts her to bed in his room. When she wakes up, we have this conversation: Her face flushed crimson. Then maybe next time I'll be awake and you won't have to take advantage of the situation. Probably all night. And if I had wanted to take advantage of the situation, I pretty much could have. You were out for the night. Two: Never, ever remind a woman that you could have raped her but didn't. I mean, what the fuck is wrong with you!?!?! Do you think she's going to be all like, "Thank you for not raping me" or "It's a good thing Jake's not a rapist!
I think I'll have sex with him now! Hell, no. Just don't ever, ever, do this - not sexy, not cute, very creepy. A few paragraphs later, he's telling her about what a great person he is for leaving the bra and panties on. Creepy pervert. Anorexia insults. Just as that thought slid into her head, an anorexic-looking petite redhead no older than twenty, who was stationed behind that elegant reception counter, popped her head from behind the computer and asked, "Can I help you? This makes me rage! First off, you don't know her. She's skinnier than you, so she must be anorexic?!?!
Fuck you. Secondly, anorexia is a serious disease. Stop using it as an insult. Ignorant, uneducated She had very little history in relationships: three to be precise. She had never even experienced the big O. Aw, hell no. One: three is a perfectly respectable number of sexual partners when you're Two: Stop calling orgasms "The Big O. Note: she does this throughout the entire book. Three: Listen, sugar, you don't need a man to give you an orgasm. All you need is your two hands and your imagination.
That's it. I have NO hope for you if you have such a low sex drive you've never masturbated. Watch, when she goes to bed with Jake she'll suddenly be very sexual. Four: I can't believe you went through three guys and never had an orgasm. What were you doing, just lying back silently and hoping for a miracle? Men aren't psychic! You have to give them a little encouragement, instruction, and direction. Men are easily taught and eager to please at least they should be, if you're in bed with them!
Perhaps you should have made your wants and desires known. Of course, you may have a bit of trouble knowing what those wants and desires are if you never took the time to pleasure yourself, so You will be relieved to know that once Jake Boston and Kit start having sex, Jake cuts out the creepy behavior. Big sighs of relief all around. He actually turns into a sweet, supportive man. However, I honestly wish that there were no sex scenes in this.
They should've all been cut out. Listen, some people just can't write good sex. It appears McKeehan is one of them. I was either bored during the sex scenes, or wrinkling my nose in disgust. Kit was still trying to recover from his bone-shattering kiss Well, that sounds painful. He ran his hands over her again, liking the feel of her. He was pretty sure this afternoon there were a lot of firsts in this bed. Also, I want to note that I'm not adding these ellipses in here. McKeehan is just very fond of ellipses. Warped as he was, her inexperience only aroused him more.
Or Watching him cook caused her juices to flow - again. I've got this thing for it," he teased. Or Then his fingers dug into moist heat. I am just cringing. Please describe this in a more gentle way. Here's Jake being romantic: "We'll be in the same nursing home.
I'll be the guy talking about boats. You'll turn to me and ask if I remember the first time we made love on a boat. I'll say, of course I remember the first time. I may be old, but how could I forget that? It was spring, a beautiful May evening, but as beautiful as the night was it could never compare to how beautiful you are now and how beautiful you were the first time we made love on a boat. This doesn't even make sense.
Not even a little sense. Birth Control. They have unprotected sex about a dozen times before Jake finally raises the issue of birth control. Ah, yes. That's the time you should talk about pregnancy and STDs - after you've had sex over 10 times. AND, to make it worse, this conversation never gets resolved, instead breaking off into a discussion of the abuse she suffered as a child. Next thing you know, it's the next chapter and they are having loads of unprotected sex again.
I am like, "Excuse me? The pill? STD screening? Can you hear me? I'm not even joking. This plotline is so strange, it's as if it doesn't even belong in this book. Cliffs of Dooneen is a song that is mentioned in the book - I love when books mention songs by name so that I can listen to them while reading. Tl;dr - The mystery is gripping and enjoyable, but unfortunately a big part of this book is romance.
And the romance is terrible. The ending is pretty satisfying, but not conclusive as McKeehan is obviously setting up the sequels. One book for each female. Am I interested in reading any sequels? I would not like to slog through the romance parts again, but I am interested in what happens to the characters. View all 9 comments. Although Kit had suffered an abusive childhood at the hands of her mother, she had since moved on and built a life of her own and was doing well for herself. Kit carried a great deal of mental scars from her childhood, but was she capable of murdering her own mother?
This book held my attention right from the start all the way to the last page. Fast paced page turner which When Kit Griffin's mother Alana Stevens is found viciously murdered on Mother's Day, Kit turns out to be the prime suspect. View all 3 comments. Before I say anything else about this book, let me start by saying this type of story line isn't my cup of tea which is why I gave it a two-star rating.
Going by the description given for this book it seems like it would be a suspenseful crime mystery. If you're into hot steamy romance this is the book for you! If you're looking for a suspenseful mystery thriller you might want to pass this one up. View all 6 comments. I hardly slept for a week while reading this book because I couldn't put it down! Just Evil held my attention from beginning to end and I fell in love with all the characters.
There are so many twists and turns and just when I thought I figured out the mystery, another curve ball. I love reading a book that challenges my imagination and has the ability to draw me into the story. There is never a boring moment in this book and as you peel away the layers of the mystery, it only gets more intense.
I laughed, cried and found myself rooting for Kit and Jake!! There's a perfect blend of mystery, suspense, romance and spine tingling excitement. I already purchased Deeper Evil which is the second in the trilogy and I can't wait to start reading it. If you are looking for a story that can keep you on the edge of your seat, Just Evil is the book for you. I will definitely add Vickie McKeehan to my list of favorite authors and I plan to read all of her books!!! The romance adds to the depth of the plot, which goes back forty years and two evil women. All in all an excellent read.
I loved this book and Vickie's ability to develop her characters is amazing. I couldn't put the book down. View 2 comments. The Evil Trilogy is the story of three best friends, who grow up together in Beverly Hills under the dark clouds of murder, drugs and abuse. Until a mysterious stranger and a lost love drags her back into the sins of her mother. When the characters jump off the page, you know you have found an excellent book to The Evil Trilogy is the story of three best friends, who grow up together in Beverly Hills under the dark clouds of murder, drugs and abuse.
When the characters jump off the page, you know you have found an excellent book to curl up with on the couch. A definite 5 star keeper! Vickie Mckeehan is a must-read in my book. A brilliant read for the genre. From a stunning cover to a an enticing plot the book had me hooked. Kit should have the perfect life. She is young, beautiful and her mother is stinking rich. The catch is -- her mother hates her and this hate translates to Kit being a murder suspect once her mothers body is found. But her mother is not the only person dying. People Kit knew all her life is dropping dead Kit is dreaming as well, a dream about an old house and two elderly people, in the dream they g A brilliant read for the genre.
Kit is dreaming as well, a dream about an old house and two elderly people, in the dream they get killed. With a brand new romance and a murder investigation in which Kit is the only suspect the clock is ticking. Will she survive long enough to be arrested? Some explicit sex scenes present but not in anyway erotic. I think all readers will like this book. View 1 comment. There was so much going on in this story, taking me from surprise again and again and again.
I can't reveal too much except that I am so glad this is a series because I cannot wait to read the next story. The more I read about how Alana mistreated her daughter Kit, I felt a pang of sadness, anger and fear because Vickie got this right, Alana was pure evil. It was heart-wrenching how it was possible for someone to be that cruel to their child. It scares me to think that there might actually be parents out there like that.

I can understand the concept of abusive parents to some extent but some of the things Alana did were really, I don't know of a better word, spiteful. It's like she was taking her anger out on the child and I still cannot understand her motive or reasoning. Kit's and Jake's friends were brilliant. I liked each one of them and found all of their loyalties, and sudden defensiveness on behalf of their friends entertaining. Especially how everytime someone upset Kit, Baylee and Quinn would immediately attack!
This is particularly true with drama club, a beacon to so many teens outside the mainstream who want to make art. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire , by J. Rowling There are seven Harry Potter novels, of course, but this is the one packed with the most excruciatingly relatable teenage problems and growing pains. Harry, Ron, and Hermione start acting like moody adolescents and as they wade into the dating pool, and Harry and Ron realize for the first time that Hermione is a girl.
The Outsiders , by S. Hinton Who knows teens better than a teen knows teens? Amazingly, S.
Hinton was just 19 years old when she wrote this sad, violent, humanity-steeped story about the roughneck gang-like Greasers and the preppy, jerky Socs they have to deal with at school. It feels intense and realistic, like a more richly imagined West Side Story set against the rural backdrop of small-town Oklaoma. Carrie , by Stephen King Stephen King brilliantly takes those feelings of being unsure about the insane, random, rapid changes our bodies go through in adolescence, and renders them terrifying.
Carrie is about a young woman discovering her own self, trying to put parental control aside, and dealing with weird body stuff. Blankets , by Craig Thompson A lot of high school kids have a super-religious phase, as spirituality offers a lot of answers—or at least comfort—in a very tumultuous time. Themes that would come to define YA are present in The Pigman, too: teens questioning the grownup world, their values and struggle to create their own identity without killing their hearts.
The action of the book concerns two high schoolers, John and Lorraine, who take turns reporting their experiences with a misunderstood old man named Mr. All the Bright Places , by Jennifer Niven So many YA novels are about escape, because being a teenager is about escaping: escaping high school, escaping the hometown, escaping family, escaping problems. So whatever happened to good old-fashioned allegory?
The Reluctant Journal of Henry K. Larsen , by Susin Nielsen The diary format works so well for high school stories because it feels immediate, intimate, and authentic. That approach is needed for the gut-punch of Henry K. Henry is forced to move and go to a new school after his brother is so mercilessly teased that he unleashes his anger and pain with a school shooting.
Jerry must exhibit bravery beyond his years to stand up to the mob. Simon vs. Forever , by Judy Blume Queen Judy, mistress of the middle-grade novel, was not a one-trick pony. She wrote respectful, realistic literature for kids of almost every age. Forever is one of her classics, dealing with the sensitive, agonizing subjects of young love…and sex.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Novelization
Katherine meets Michael, falls in love, and embarks on a sexual relationship with him, in a story that evokes all the excitement and tenderness of a budding relationship. Looking for Alaska , by John Green Green has a gift for writing about the teenage experience in incredibly relatable ways.
