The Amish communities of Wisconsin are centered in three general areas: in the northeastern part of the state south and east of the city of Eau Claire; in the southeast region stretching from Whitewater down to Beloit; and in the south-central region, including our very own counties of Columbia, Green Lake, Marquette, Sauk and Vernon. Generally, all the Amish in south-central Wisconsin are Old Order Amish, with no tractors in the fields, few telephones except at an occasional shop or along a lonely lane, hook-and-eye closures on clothing instead of buttons, and small one-room schoolhouses.
One can find several Amish businesses, or businesses supporting Amish heritage, along many routes in the area. Most of these roads are very old and follow the "lay of the land", and were constructed using routes in existence in the 's and 's. The State Trail offers beautiful scenery, bountiful wildlife, sandstone outcroppings, rolling farmland and runs parallel with the Baraboo River. Trails vary in difficulty from easy to quite challenging. Trails are not maintained in winter. Ferry Bluff is open to hiking only and is closed from November March 31st to protect bald eagle roosting sites.
The Blackhawk Unit area contains miles of hiking, horseback riding, and cross country ski trails and features the Blackhawk Indian battlefield and Native American effigy mounds. Mirror Lake State Park features sandstone bluffs surrounding the lake and offers Directly beneath the arch is a rock shelter once used by Paleo-Indians, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. At its uppermost part, the glen reaches a depth of nearly feet. The Glen contains rare flora of the Driftless Area.
The walking trails take you over the deep gorge. If you visit use caution as there are no railings. Bird life is diverse and includes large numbers of rare open country birds. Tower Hill offers a fascinating glimpse of WI history. Hike to the top of the bluff where an old shot tower and smelter house have been reconstructed you will find an exhibit explaining the shot-making operation.
The park has 11 campsites, hiking trails, picnic areas and a canoe landing. The best way to get across Lake Wisconsin is to bike across! Go from Sauk City to the ferry and loop back through Prairie du Sac. Watch out for golf balls and lake front property for sale on the route. Highway out to the ferry turns into what the locals lovingly refer to as Roller Coaster Road with tons of ups and downs. Great for a leisurely Sunday ride! This ride starts with about 8 miles of general spinning the good. This is quickly followed by an assortment of moderate hills and downhills the Bad. Finally, Hilltop Road treats you to the ugly - a huge climb under the tree canopy followed by a decent climb on Swiss Valley Road.
You are rewarded with a slow downhill back into town and a quick run through downtown Sauk Prairie. The ride down Denzer Road is absolutely picturesque. Not too much for climbs, ample spinning. Encircle all of Sauk Prairie! Enter town on one bridge and exit on the other. This Choosing to battle the hills first will reward you with a rush of high speed downhill and flat spinning cool down.
Dunlop Hollow Hill is a brutal ft rise over about 1. This quick but brutal climb will get you warmed up. The Roxbury Shorty! A quick ride through the sleepy village of Roxbury. A little gradual elevation. Complete the ride on an early weekend and top it off with breakfast at the Roxbury Tavern! A simple 11 mile loop with some hills thrown in to mix it up. Mostly rolling countryside roads. The shoulder is a little tight in some spots, so be aware.
An easier loop for a quick morning ride - treat yourself with pancakes at Eagle Inn or Blue Spoon after a morning ride! Looking for a quick ride that is a great workout? This 9-mile run will have you exploring your entire gear-set with a large hill on Hornung Road followed by 3 decent hills on the way home on Mack Road. Scenic rolling farmland with a quick view of one of the vineyards where Wollersheim picks for their estate wines!
Right in the middle perfectly at mile 15 there is a monster of a hidden hill. So just when you got acclimated to sitting in the saddle and keeping a cadence, this may just tear you right off your seat! Beautiful ride through grassland prairies and small unincorporated towns like Black Hawk. Take the scenic route along the Wisconsin River! The road needs some TLC, but has lower and slower traffic. This quick loop could spawn a day of adventure. Host a picnic at the Mazomanie Oak Barrens access about 1. From Sauk Prairie to the Capital! Note, this not a loop. This mile ride has a good mix of hills gradual and sharp and flat spinning runs.
The trail on either side of Springfield Hill is in great condition. The back roads provide a good mix of hills to balance the nice and easy ride on the trail. Once you get down to Madison, take a victory lap around the Capital and grab some cheese curds and an old fashioned or microbrew at Vintage on University! Named after the infamous Fourth of July Parade in Witwen, WI, this quick 21 mile jaunt packs in a lot of good spin time!
Not too much for hills, but good flat straightaways to work on your speed. Time this bike ride just right and you can picnic at the Witwen concerts in the summer - an underground local favorite! Get in a quick 10 mile tour of Sauk Prairie! Built in , the center houses a 1, gallon fish tank and tons of great info on the Riverway area.

This countryside ride looks like a quick mile ride at first glance, but the sheer amount of silent, gradual hills is surprising. Good bang for your buck on a quick workout. Start off by going straight up Hwy 60 to overlook Prairie du Sac. Barta Road sneaks up on you on a quick downhill and takes you quickly by Fish Lake. Two-thirds of the way done and you face Mack Road, which is a straight shot filled with small hills. End on a downhill, speeding past Wollersheim Winery!
The trail is named for the Chicago-Northwestern passenger train that once operated on this grade. Paul in minutes. A daily or annual State Trail Pass is required for riders 16 and older.
