Getting and staying in touch with our Higher Power is a key element for our success in OA.
We are advised to pray throughout the day as a means of finding and maintaining our abstinence. We often pray to start and close our meetings. An extensive body of prayers are available to support OA members spiritual development, some originating in our Tradition, others from AA and other 12 Step programs and some have been passed down through the ages. Scroll down for a listing of prayers that compulsive overeaters and other addicts use on a daily basis to support their recovery. I put my hand in yours, and together we can do what we could never do alone.
No longer is there a sense of hopelessness, no longer must we each depend upon our own unsteady willpower. We are all together now, reaching out our hands for power and strength greater than ours, and as we join hands, we find love and understanding beyond our wildest dreams. God grant me the serenity to Accept the things I cannot change; Courage to change the things I can; And the Wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at a time; accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;. Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will; that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him forever in the next.
Lord, make me a channel of thy peace that where there is hatred, I may bring love that where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness that where there is discord, I may bring harmony that where there is error, I may bring truth that where there is doubt, I may bring faith that where there is despair, I may bring hope that where there are shadows, I may bring light that where there is sadness, I may bring joy.
Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort than to be comforted to understand, than to be understood to love, than to be loved.
For it is by self-forgetting that one finds. It is by forgiving that one is forgiven. It is by dying that one awakens to Eternal Life. Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love where there is injury, pardon where there is doubt, faith where there is despair, hope where there is darkness, light where, there is sadness, joy.
For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. God, I offer myself to thee-to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt.
Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will. May I do Thy will always. God, help me to show tolerance, pity and patience. This is a sick man. How can I be helpful to him? God save me from being angry. Thy will be done. God, I ask that you would mold my ideals, and help me to live up to them.

Where I have done harm, God show me what I should do about each specific matter. God, I am sorry for what I have done, and have an honest desire to let You take me to better things. God, I earnestly pray for the right ideal, for guidance in each questionable situation, for sanity, and for the strength to do the right thing. God, I still cling to some things that I have admitted are objectionable.
Help me to be willing to let them go. My Creator, I am now willing that You should have all of Me, good and bad. I pray that you now remove from me every single defect of character which stands in the way of my usefulness to You and my fellows. Grant me strength, as I go out from here, to do Your bidding. I pray that I may be given strength and direction to do the right thing, no matter what the personal consequences may be.
God, please help me review my day. Please grant me the willingness to see what you would have me see, in the light you would have me see it: free from morbid reflection, fear, obsessive guilt, and dishonesty. God, I pray for forgiveness for the wrongs I have done today. I ask that I be shown what corrective measures should be taken. God, I am faced with indecision and I am unable to determine which course to take. I ask You for inspiration, an intuitive thought, or a decision.

It launched Hazelden into the publishing business in , and remains a best seller today. Organizationally, the book is a model of simplicity. The three sections generally form a thematic whole.
The second moves one or more ideas in the theme to the level of sustained meditation. Thought, meditation, and prayer form a harmonious spiritual continuum which engages head, heart, and imagination, and allows for deep spiritual reflection and contemplation. The classic model is found in the St. Warning: there are a number of books with the same title, so pay attention to the above ISBNs. In the rooms, the book is used for topic meetings.
A volunteer usually chooses a reading and that becomes the topic for discussion. We can also use it for individual reflection, zeroing in on a particular issue we are having trouble with e. I did that for many years and still do it today. In either case, they are consistently based on 12 Step principles and illustrate how we can practice those principles in various types of situations.
They are typically fairly well thought out and expressed. The concluding quote generally sums up that main idea, drawing from a variety of sources, both ancient and contemporary.
Overeaters Anonymous Prayers
The book is intended for those who have an alcoholic in their lives, whether active or recovering. That of course includes many of us who are in recovery. It can also give us a broader view of the 12 Steps. However, the book has a more contemporary tone and idiom. Nevertheless, the principles remain the same, as does the spiritual perspective they reflect. This makes the book a worthy accompaniment to the ODAT. It draws on the contributions of hundreds of NA members over the course of five years. The entries are organized by the month but do not coincide numerically with the Step for that month.
