Its not bad and touchscreen e-book dictionaries help. One method I tried was to attempt reading the Spanish phonetically while listening to a corresponding English audiobook and that case I got one of the most painful headaches ever. Reading a second language book makes evident stylistic things evident that fly past unnoticed in the primary language. I also learned that one word for wife in the singular means handcuffs in the plural esposas.
Anyway when looking at Harry Potter I kinda freaked out in the first couple of pages of unfamiliar verbs and nouns and was surprised that the word shudder showed up again too. After calming down and retrying in a less rigorous skim-along-a-familiar story method it wasn't so bad although I haven't as yet read the whole thing.
Regarding modern fiction, I'm considering Dima Zales. Regarding French, Voltaire's Candide is actually pretty funny, but, again, beyond my ability threshold.
One niche of fiction based on immersive role playing game simulations is called litrpg and good primary language writers are writing in Russian and Korean right now. Dima Zales sounds interesting! I found his web site, but didn't see the dual-language editions, just the translations.
I'll have to keep looking! And Candide is on my list to read! I haven't looked at it yet, so I'm not sure if I'm capable just yet. I often have trouble sticking to one language at a time, though, so I'm trying to focus on German for now haha. Hi Bvogel1! I read your reply in my e-mail notification, but for some reason I can't see your response here in the thread, so I'll just comment further up haha.
I agree that it's nice to read about "grown-up" subjects instead of kid stuff all the time I think one of the hardest parts of learning a new language is the disconnect between having complex thoughts and not being able to express them. When you read the mysteries, please let me know if you like them, and what level you think they're good for! I might make a survey and start a Google Doc to track the reading materials people suggest here.
I'll definitely do that! And it sounds like a great idea to try and organize the suggestions being made; I agree there's a lot of great information out there and that would make it all much easier to keep track of and find. Als blinde Passagierin konnte ich mich an die Fersen von Fogg und Passepartout heften und ihre Reiseroute mit zu erleben. Ich fand es spannend und lustig zugleich.
