Such efforts to undermine and misinterpret environmental data, labeled the "brownlash" by the Ehrlichs, prolong an already difficult search for solutions and are deeply disturbing to environmental scientists. In Betrayal of Science and Reason, the Ehrlichs contrast anti-environmental rhetoric with the consensus view of the scientific community, tackling head-on such issues as population growth, desertification, food production, global warming, ozone depletion, acid rain, and biodiversity loss.
They also offer a unique glimpse into how science works, and they discuss how scientists can speak out on matters of societal urgency yet retain the support of the scientific community. This book provides an eye-opening look at current environmental problems and the fundamental importance of the scientific process in solving them. It presents unique insight into the sources and implications of anti-environmental rhetoric, and it provides readers with a valuable means of understanding and refuting the feel-good fables that constitute the brownlash. When the subjects were brought up, I tried to think whether I would be able to counter their quotes, let alone, whether what they were saying was believable. At times, I would not know what to answer, and thought that some of their comebacks were believable, other times I knew there was something fishy, and occasionally, I was certain it was wrong.
Regardless of the right or wrong in it, a great point to grab from this book is the lessons we can learn on how people can distort the facts to lean them towards their personal thinking or outcomes. Analyzing them and reading how they find the reasons behind their controversial remarks is very educative and useful for you personal debates. Great info and lessons here.
Many years ago I was mesmerized by 'Pop Bomb. Rhetoric of insult, along with claiming the moral high ground and suppression of debate, appears typical of today's demagogic approach to environmental advocacy.

Along with many accurate insights, this population guru seems oblivious to the fact that CO2 is exactly correlated with population growth. Ehrlich's solutions are very weak, ignoring population control. In omission, these authors must be very embarrassed by the ethanol scam and environmentalist rejection of nuclear energy and probably by Al Gore, who is mentioned only in connection with his mentor Roger Revelle. Consideration of environmental costs is negligibly sparse, with mitigation, so unpopular with environmentalists, never considered. In fact it's a push back on the environmentalist attack on capitalism and property rights to establish a regulatory tyranny in the service of egalitarian justice, supported many times throughout the current volume.
The conflict over property rights is not limited to access to natural resources.
Betrayal of Science and Reason: How Anti-Environmental Rhetoric Threatens Our Future
After saying that they can't know much about the environment, they want to educate the public. With some banal energy recommendations they are unaware that increased efficiency has resulted in greater usage for the last years. They advocate a palliative vegetarianism, not the more effective veganism. Curiously they don't weigh in on organic farming or use of GMOs. It's science by polling, with climate change subject to much uncertainty while the next sentence cites certainty.

There's a simplistic analysis of feedback effects being positive or negative. It should be positive AND negative as with precipitation and albedo. They are oblivious to sea level rise for 12, years before the industrial age. A 'good news' section includes nutrition improvements. The Clean Water Act has improved water quality meeting Millennium goals which are strangely absent, with NGOs being more influential than government. They refer to the famous bet with Julian Simon showing resources are getting more abundant.
Much of the book is a squirming defense to show that the hiatus is temporary. There are no statistics on modern extinctions relative to that since beginnings of life.
